Rik built his own fee-only financial planning firm (The Mutual Fund Store of Memphis) on the belief that "If you do what is right for clients every single day, regardless of profit, you will be successful in the long run." As a teen, Rik was granted the rank of Eagle Scout, worked part time teaching and building computers, and ran the University of Missouri Macintosh User Group and Bulletin Board System. Later he earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from of the University of Missouri in three years while co-founding a promotional apparel business. After school, he worked for over a decade as a Technical Project Director managing multi-million-dollar technology projects for companies including CBS News, Sprint Corp, Northwestern University McGaw Medical Center, University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System, and The University of Chicago Medicine.

He holds his Series 65 registration, and CMFC® designation from the College for Financial Planning.
