Stanley B. Corey, CFP®
Stanley B. Corey is a Certified Financial Planner™ professional (CFP®), Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC), and a Managing Director of United Capital Financial Advisors in Great Falls, Virginia. He has almost 40 years of experience in the financial services industry. Throughout his financial planning career Stanley has been an active participant in the industry associations, serving on a number of advisory councils for the IAFP, currently the Financial Planning Association (FPA), a member of the Institute of Certified Financial Planners, the International Association of Collaborative Divorce (IACP) and member of the Washington D.C. chapter of the FPA. He has also completed the Harvard Negotiation Institute Workshop in September 2009 at Harvard Law School. For 18 years, he was an instructor at Northern Virginia Mediation Service and past President of NVMS. He has become a leading financial mediator and financial neutral in collaborative divorce cases.
Stanley was born in New York and grew up in Stony Brook, New York, on Long Island. Upon graduation from American International College in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1971, he served in the U.S. Navy for just over four years. Service in the Navy brought him to the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area in 1972, and he has been here ever since. He began his career in the financial services industry in 1980, and in 1986 he formed his own firm, Great Falls Financial Services, a fee-based independent Registered Investment Advisory firm. In 2006, he merged his firm with Private Wealth Advisors to form c5 Wealth Management, LLC. In 2013, he and his partner merged c5WM with United Capital Financial Advisors in Newport Beach, California and is a partner in UCFA. Since 2003, Stanley has been selected as one of the nation's Top 500 Wealth Managers by Bloomberg Wealth Manager Magazine, and in 2009 he and his partner were selected as Financial Planners of the Year by Boomer Market Advisor magazine. Most recently, was named as one of the Top Financial Planners in Northern Virginia for 2016.
Community Involvement: Stan has been an active member in the local community, has been a guest speaker at a number of industry conferences, is a featured writer on a blog for “Sixty & Me,” and co-wrote and co-taught a required course for mediator certification at Northern Virginia Mediation Services (NVMS). He has been a speaker on the financial aspects of divorce at the Women's Center in Vienna, Virginia; has been featured in national publications such as USA Today, Working Women Magazine, MONEY, Good Housekeeping and Northern Virginia Magazine; and has provided expert commentary on local television networks. He continues to work closely with a number of local Family Practice Lawyers, is an expert witness in divorce cases and a founding member of the Virginia Collaborative Professionals (VACP). He is a former member of the BOD of Lift Me Up, a therapeutic riding organization in Great Falls, and a current member of the Executive Committee of the Georgetown Lombardi Cancer Research Center. He has written a book, The Divorce Dance (divorcedance.com), released in January 2016. This is a novel that deals with the monetary, emotional and legal issues, taking the reader through a divorce where the wife educates the reader by her own investigation of what to do as she goes through her own divorce process. As a result he has become well recognized locally as one of the top Financial Advisors in Family Law. Stan continues to promote mediation and collaborative divorce as an alternative to a litigated divorce. He is many times the financial advocate for the less well informed in divorce cases, providing understanding complex financial issues and helping the client make difficult decisions that affect the rest of their lives.
Stan’s Client Philosophy: Stan loves to figure out a client’s needs just like someone else might put together a puzzle. He listens to a client explain their financial concerns, dreams and desires and then maps out a plan to try and help them reach those goals. “It is all in listening to the client, understanding their overall situation and then figuring out the best way to help them reach their goals.” He believes that planning is a process, not an event. His goal is to help clients make better financial decisions by having them understand their options and the long-term impact of their choices. It is the working-together relationship that he enjoys the most, learning all about the client and their family dynamics, and in many cases working with siblings, parents and children of the client.
Over the years, Stan has also worked with a number of clients who have a special needs child or sibling or incapacitated parent. This became a personal issue when his grandson was severely injured in an auto accident at the age of just 5 months in 2004. As a result, he has become very knowledgeable in the issues of Special Needs children and has great satisfaction in being able to assist families in this matter. In addition, he has been working with many retirees from the transition into retirement through the life changes during retirement, from aging in place to finding the best place to receive care, either at home or in an assisted-living environment. He has spoken at a number of retirement communities about the changes and is currently writing a book about the different stages of retirement, from the transition into retirement and the go-go years to slow-go to no-go and end-of-life planning. The book should be released in 2018.
Activities and Hobbies: He and his wife, Jayme, live in Great Falls and enjoy being with their children and grandchildren. Stan raced and cruised on sailboats for most of his life. He still is able to go on an occasional sail with friends but now spends many weekends playing golf with new friends and his wife. In addition, he is able to have an opportunity to fly fish on the Potomac River and do floats on other Virginia rivers. He has replaced his boats with ones with four wheels! He can be found most Saturday mornings at the Great Falls “Cars and Coffee” car event that is open to the public.
